Let me tell you upfront that I really loved this book. This is my kind of to-go-YA-Book: a really cute story of boy meets girl that makes you go all smiley and warm inside.
You have the girl: Samantha. She comes from a small family, her father left when she was born, so it’s just her mother and sister. I immediately liked the fact that we get to know more about her family. Her mother, a control freak with aspirations to get into politics, has really strong feelings against big families. Her sister is just living the life and going away for the summer with her boyfriend. Samantha has been living next door to a really messy and big family, admiring them from a far because of the differencees in their households.
You have the boy: Jase (Jason). He is a hard working guy that has been training to get a scholarship to get into college, while taking care of the little ones in the family. He is quite the handy man, always fixing everything around the house, even motorcycles and cars.
You have the meeting: the roof outside her window. One day, Jase climbs her windows and begins talking to her. He had noticed, all this time, Samantha observing his family. They begin developing a really nice friendship with many witty and funny conversations. He introduces her to his world: a really happy, loving and caring family. Their relationship begins developing with a first kiss. Let me tell you, every interaction between these two is really what every reader is looking for in a YA book, in the romantic aspect.
The thing about this book is that it explores a realistic romance between two teenagers, along with first times, meeting the parents, disapproval of the parents and everything else alike. Another aspect I really liked was the exploration of workaholic parents, family dynamics and negative friends.
This is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. It had everything that I like in a YA book: interesting characters, a cute romance and funny/witty remarks. I’m not even sure how to word everything that I liked about this book, but just trust me and read it.
Let me know what you think about My Life Next Door if you’ve read it 🙂
